  1. Verbs in -iar. Most of these bear the stress of voice and the written accent on the final i of the stem (envi-ar) in those nine forms in which radical-changing verbs of the Class I undergo a vowel change. See 340 and enviar, 39. 352.

(a) The more important verbs in -iar that do not accent the i of these forms are estudiar, to study, cambiar, to change, principiar, to begin, limpiar, to clean, anunciar, to anounce, and presenciar, to witness. 353.

  1. Verbs in -uar. Practically all such stress and accent the final u of the stem in the same forms as do verbs in -iar. See continuar, 40. 354.

(a) All verbs that end in -guar fall in Class I of orthographical-changing verbs. See 346. 355.

  1. Verbs whose stem ends in II. These are regular except in those forms whose syllables following the stem contain 46 or -ie-. Then the unaccented i is absorbed by then and is omitted in writing. This would occur in the gerund, 3rd person singular and plural of the preterite indicative and in the eighteen forms of the imperfect subjunctives and the future subjunctive derived from the preterite. See gruilir, 42. 356.

(a) This i likewise disappears in the preterite indicative singular and plural and derived forms of decir (5), traer (r9), and verbs of the type of traducir (z8), that is, when the irregular preterite stem ends in j. 357.

io. Verbs whose stem ends in 11. The unaccented i is absorbed, this time by the 11, in the same places as those indicated in 356. See bullir, 41. 358.

1. Verbs in -er or -ir whose stem ends in a strong vowel (a, e, o, i). When an unaccented i is found between vowels in endings of verbs of this type it becomes y both in pronunciation and spelling. This occurs in the same forms as those indicated in 356. See leer, 43. 359.

(a) The past participle of such verbs must have a written accent on the i of the ending in order to retain on this weak vowel the stress that is customary in the next to the last syllable of the past participle: leer — leido. 360.

12. Verbs in -uir (u pronounced). Such verbs add consonant y to the stem except when the inflexional ending begins with i. This occurs in all the singular and the 3rd person plural of the present indicative and all of the present subjunctive. See construir, 44. Compare with distinguir, 33, (u not pronounced), 347. 361.
