Spanish Course Lesson 7 LA HORA (The Time)
To ask the time we say:
¿QUÉ HORA ES?
There are two ways to express the time in Spanish. You can say first the hour and then the minutes e.g. 9:50 a.m. Son las diez (hour) menos diez (minutes) or you can just read the time as you see it in a digital watch e.g. Son las nueve y cincuenta.
¿Qué hora es? (1:00) (What time is it?) Es la una (en punto) (de la mañana o de la tarde) (It's one (o’clock) (in the morning or in the afternoon)
Note: When you want to express that it is 1 (one …) you must say the verb to be in the singular in Spanish. Consequently, you will say: ES la … and NOT SON las…
¿Qué hora es? (2:00) (What time is it?) Son las dos (de la mañana o de la tarde) (It's two o’clock (in the morning or in the afternoon)
¿Qué hora es? (3:15) (What time is it?) Son las tres y cuarto (It's a quarter past three)
¿Qué hora es? (4:10) (What time is it?) Son las cuatro y diez (It’s ten past four)
¿Qué hora es? (5:25) (What time is it?) Son las cinco y veinticinco (It’s twenty five past five)
¿Qué hora es? (6:30) (What time is it?) Son las seis y media (It’s half past six)
¿Qué hora es? (7:35) (What time is it?) Son las ocho menos veinticinco (It’s twenty five to eight)
¿Qué hora es? (8:45) (What time is it?) Son las nueve menos cuarto. (It’s a quarter to nine)
¿Qué hora es? (12:00) (What time is it?) Es mediodía/ medianoche. (It’s midday/midnight)
Exercise: Write the correct time:
¿Qué hora es?
2:05 Son las dos y cinco
4:35 Son las cinco menos veinticinco
7:45 Son las ocho menos cuarto
9:55 Son las diez menos cinco.
1:15 Es la una y cuarto 13:15 Es la una y cuarto
5:30 Son las cinco y media 17:30 Son las cinco y media
11:20 Son las once y veinte
12:00 Son las doce en punto / Son las doce de la noche / Son las doce del mediodía Note: In Spanish you can also find the time as e.g.: 17:30 p.m. This is read as Son las cinco y media.
